Kane brace sets up Club World Cup last eight clash with PSG

Bayern Munich marched on to the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain, after a 4-2 victory over Brazilian side Flamengo at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

A Harry Kane double, an Erick Pulgar own goal and a Leon Goretzka strike were enough to ensure Vincent Kompany’s men progressed to face the European champions in the last eight.

A fierce effort from Gerson and a Jorginho penalty twice got Flamengo back into the tie but the Bundesliga winners never relinquished their lead.

The result means Bayern become the third European club to go through to the last eight so far.

For Flamengo, meanwhile, a brief early stoppage for a balloon that had strayed onto the pitch ultimately proved a rather fitting metaphor.

Their party at the inaugural expanded Club World Cup – one that saw them showcase their quality and fighting spirit to a globe audience – came to an end.

How the action unfolded

Bayern began brightly with a flurry of corners inside the opening five minutes. It proved to be third-time lucky for the German champions when Joshua Kimmich’s set-piece was headed in to his own net by Pulgar.

Four minutes later, the lead was extended. Kane picked the ball up on the edge of the box before unleashing a low strike that rattled the inside of the post before nestling into the far side of the net.

Kompany’s side suddenly had a commanding lead in the tie. Flamengo were stunned. But the Brazilian outfit are top of their domestic league for a reason.

And just after the half-hour mark, they were back in the contest when captain Gerson arrowed an unstoppable first-time strike past Manuel Neuer high into the Bayern net.

But the Flamengo resurgence lasted all of eight minutes as Goretzka restored his team’s two-goal advantage with an effort from distance that wrongfooted goalkeeper Agustin Rossi.

Seven minutes after the restart, the Rio de Janeiro club again clawed themselves back into the game after a cross from the right was deemed to have struck Michael Olise on the arm.

Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot and up stepped former Chelsea and Arsenal man Jorginho to score his first goal for his new employers.

With 30 minutes remaining the game began to open up. Flamengo had a handful of half-chances before playing themselves into trouble with just over 15-minutes remaining.

Kimmich fed Kane whose confident finish into the bottom corner gave Bayern their fourth to make it a much more comfortable final quarter of an hour.

Bayern had one final chance to add a cherry to the cake. The departing Leroy Sane, who is set to join Turkish side Galatasaray on a three-year deal after the tournament, charged down on goal.

But the former Manchester City winger could not apply the finish, blasting his shot against Rossi’s legs.

It mattered not. Bayern went through to face PSG in Atlanta on Saturday.
