Sarina Wiegman set to lead England for next Women’s World Cup

Sarina Wiegman will remain in charge of England’s Lionesses through the next World Cup cycle, no matter the team’s performance at the upcoming Euro 2025 tournament, according to Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham.

Wiegman, who led England to Euro 2022 glory and the 2023 World Cup final, is contracted with the FA until 2027. Despite being drawn into a challenging Euro group alongside France, the Netherlands, and Wales, the FA is fully backing the Dutch coach. for the future.

“We’re delighted that Sarina’s in place until 2027 and I don’t see any scenario changing that,” said Bullingham.

“I think she’s done a phenomenal job and we’re really happy to have her with us. She’s a very important part of our organisation.”

Though Wiegman’s deal runs until after the next World Cup, the FA has not yet held talks about extending her tenure beyond 2027.

“She’s the most successful coach in women’s international football today,” Bullingham added. “We haven’t started to look beyond that time scale yet, or engaging in those conversations.

“I think we feel like we’ve got locked in for this tournament and the next one. That feels very good for now, but that’s not to say we wouldn’t have a conversation at some point in the future, but it’s too early for that really.”

Meanwhile, Wiegman’s assistant, Arjan Veurink, will depart his role after Euro 2025 to become the Netherlands women’s national team head coach. Veurink had also been under contract until 2027, and Bullingham confirmed the FA received a compensation fee for releasing him early.

“It was a difficult circumstance in a way because it was his dream job and he’s got a young family in Netherlands so I’m sure it’s the only opportunity that he would’ve been tempted by,” Bullingham explained. “The opportunity ticked a lot of his boxes at personal level.

“We feel like we found some really good replacements [in Janneke Bijl and Arvid Smit].

On the subject of recent withdrawals from the squad, Bullingham refrained from commenting directly on the retirements of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby, or Millie Bright’s decision to pause her England duties for health reasons.

“I think Sarina’s addressed that in detail and we’re looking forwards, not backwards,” he said. “We’re really confident in squad we’ve got going to the Euros.

“Our aim is to win. In terms of the tournament buildup, I think we feel like the team’s in a really good place. Obviously, there’ve been a number of players who have been returning from injuries and we’re delighted that we’ve got them back.”
